Definition of Taboo

The Canada social science dictionary [1] provides the following meaning of Taboo: A polynesian word, first encountered by Captain Cook, meaning literally ‘marked off’. It refers to those special articles or symbols within a culture that are given a distinct status as either sacred, metaphysical or dangerous. Incest is a taboo most are familiar with.
