Meaning of Summerfallow

The method of cultivation whereby in each year a certain acreage of farm land is set aside, on which no crop at all is attempted to be grown. This portion is ploughed before the weeds come to seed and cultivated throughout the whole season as occasion requires, to keep the weeds down and to conserve the moisture for the crop of the ensuing season or seasons.
