Meaning of Succession Duty

A tax on the privilege of acquiring property by inheritance . A tax upon the taking of property by a beneficiary or one to whom it is distributed. See Seattle First Nat. Bank v Macomber, 32 Wash. 2d 696, 203 P.2d 1078. Not a tax on the property itself but only on the privilege of acquiring same by inheritance upon the owner ‘s death or of receiving or taking same from a decedent’s estate by will or descent or inheritance. See Re Loeb’s Estate, 400 Pa. 368, 162 A.2d207.
