Concept of “Socage, Socagium”

Traditional meaning of socage, socagium in English (with some legal use of this latin concept in England and the United States in the XIX Century) [1]: (in Latin) Tenure by certain service, not military; see 2nd Book (“The Rights of Things”), Blackstone’s Commentaries on the Laws of England 80. Free and common socage: the general, and in modern times almost universal, tenure of English land; by free services, not military, as rents (farm produce or money) ; see 2nd Book (“The Rights of Things”), Blackstone’s Commentaries on the Laws of England 79. Villein socage: tenure by base, but certain, services; see TENURE.
