Note: There is more information on maritime/admiralty law here.
The following is a definition of Ship Mortgage, produced by Tetley, in the context of admiralty law: [Translation of Ship Mortgage in French: “hypothèque maritime”] [Translation of Ship Mortgage in Spanish: “hipoteca marítima”] [Translation of Ship Mortgage in Italian: “ipoteca navale”] [Translation of Ship Mortgage in German: “Schiffshypothek”] – Security on a ship and its appurtenances by the shipowner as security for a loan. It is derived from the English common law chattel mortgage and is similar to the “hypothèque maritime” of the civil law. Ship mortgages in common law jurisdictions may be either legal or equitable mortgages. See Chap. 14 in Tetley, M.L.C., 2 Ed., 1998 at pp. 473-532; Tetley, Int’l. M. & A.
