Senior Judge Meaning in the U.S. Court System

An Article III judge who has retired from active duty but continues to perform some judicial duties, usually maintaining a reduced caseload. Commonly referred to as “senior status.” A judge who has not taken senior status may be referred to as an “active judge,” although the distinction may be misleading as many senior judges maintain full caseloads.
