Mixed Legal System
Mixed Legal System in Maritime Law
Note: There is more information on maritime/admiralty law here.
The following is a definition of Mixed Legal System, produced by Tetley, in the context of admiralty law: A legal system in which the law in force is derived from more than one legal tradition or legal family. For example, in Scotland, South Africa, Louisiana and Québec, the basic private law is derived partly from the civil law tradition (see this maritime law term in this legal dictionary) and partly from the common law tradition (see this maritime law term in this legal dictionary). See Tetley, 1999-4 Uniform Law Review 591-619 at p. 597; also available on-line at: Mixed jurisdictions: common law vs. civil law (codified and uncodified)
