c. 1600, “having sound judgment; careful, prudent,” also “manifesting sound judgment, carefully planned,” from Middle French judicieux (16c.) or directly from Medieval Latin iudiciosus “prudent, judicious,” from Latin iudicium “judgment,” from iudicem “a judge” (see judge (verb)).
