Meaning of Ignorantia juris non excusat
Ignorance of the law is no excuse. 8 Wend. (N. Y.) 267, 284; 18 Wend. (N. Y.) 586, 588; 6 Paige, Ch. (N. Y.) 189, 195; 1 Edw. Ch. (N. Y.) 467, 472. The true meaning of that maxim is that parties cannot excuse themselves from liability from all civil or criminal consequences of their acts by alleging ignorance of the law, but there is no presumption that parties must be taken to know all the legal consequences of their acts, and especially where difficult questions of law, or of the practice of the court are involved. 13 App. Cas. 78.
