Meaning of Heptarchy

A government exercised by seven persons, or a nation divided into seven governments. In the sixth century A.D., England was divided by seven different monarchies; the Jutes in Kent; the Saxons in Sussex, Wessex and Essex; the Angles in East Anglia, Bernicia and Deira and later the Angles also in the Kingdom of Mercia. These states formed what has been designated as the Anglo-Saxon Octarchy or less accurately as the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy.
