to kill by hanging, 1590s, from gibbet; this term is also a noun.. Also “to hang a dead body in a public place for the sake of infamous exposure;” hence, figuratively “expose to ridicule” (1640s). Related: Gibbeted; gibbeting.

What is Gibbet?

A definition of gibbet is: A gallows; the post on which malefactors were hanged, or on which their bodies were exposed. More details on the Encyclopedia. It differed from a common gallows, in that it consisted of one perpendicular post, from the top of which proceeded one arm, except when it was a double gibbet, which was formed in the shape of the Roman capital T.[1]
