Food and Agricultural Organization in Global Commerce Policy

Its aims, as set out in the preamble to its constitution, are (a) raising levels of nutrition and standards of living of the peoples of member states, (b) securing improvements in the efficiency of the production of all food and agricultural products, (c) bettering the condition of rural populations, and (d) in this way contributing toward an expanding world economy and ensuring humanity’s freedom from hunger. The FAO has, among others, committees on commodity problems, agriculture, and world food security. The entries on trade policy are here. It is active in land and water development, plant and animal production, forestry and fisheries. Together with the World Health Organization, the FAO administers the Codex Alimentarius Commission, intended to promote the harmonization of requirements for food and thereby facilitate international trade.
