Dispute settlement in Global Commerce Policy

In this regard, dispute settlement is: resolution of conflict arising between governments over the interpretation of trade or other rules, often through a compromize between opposing claims, sometimes through an intermediary. Dispute settlement can acquire a strongly adversarial or rules-based. Dispute settlement in the WTO usually starts after consultation has failed. The basic rules for consultation and dispute resolution are set out in Articles XXII and XXIII of the GATT for goods, Articles XXII and XXIII of the GATS for services and Article 64 of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights for intellectual property. The detailed rules to be followed in all cases are those contained in the Understanding on Rules and Procedures Governing the Settlement of Disputes.
