Concept of “Cy, Si, Etc”

Traditional meaning of cy, si, etc in the French law history (with some legal use in England and the United States in the XIX Century) [1]: (in French) So; as. Cy-près: as near [as possible]; the doctrine of construing instruments as near the intention of parties as possible; and, particularly, the equitable doctrine by which, when it would be impossible or unreasonable to carry out the directions of a testator literally, his intention is carried out so far as practicable; applied to habitable bequests; see 14 Wend. 308; 14 Allen, 549; Robinson’s Elementary Law Rev. ed.; § 357.
