Definition of Conspicuous Consumption

The Canada social science dictionary [1] provides the following meaning of Conspicuous Consumption: The public display of individual possession and consumption of expensive goods and services. The term, used by Thorsten Veblen (1857-1929), has been used to convey the idea of a society where social status is earned and displayed by patterns of consumption, rather than by what an individual does or makes.
