Meaning of Consolato del mare

A code of sea laws, compiled by order of the ancient kings of Arragon. It comprised the ancient ordinances of the Greek and Roman emperors, and of the kings of France and Spain, and the laws of the Mediterranean islands knd of Venice and Genoa. See “Admiralty.” It was originally written in the dialect of Catalonia, as its title indicates, and it has been teanslated into every language of Europe. This code has been reprinted in the second volume of the Collection de Lois Maritimes Anterieures au XVIII Siecle, par J. M. Pardessus, Paris, 1831, a collection of sea laws which is very complete. The following is a definition of “Consolato Del Mare”, produced by Tetley, in the context of admiralty law: A compilation of maritime law customs applied by consuls in the Western Mediterranean (e.g. Barcelona, Valencia, Marseilles) in the late medieval and early modern period. The Consolato is contained in the Book of the Consulate, the earliest printed edition of which, dating from 1494, is in Catalan. See Tetley, M.L.C., 2 Ed., 1998 at pp. 21-23; Tetley, Int’l. M. & A. L., 2003 at p. 13. Earlier manuscript editions of the Book exist, however.

Meaning of Consolato del Mare in the Past

The name of a code of sea laws compiled by order of the ancient kings of Aragon. Its date is not very certain, but it was adopted on the continent of Europe, as the code of maritime law (see more about this popular legal topic in the U.S. encyclopedia), during the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It included the ancient ordinances of the Greek and Roman emperors and of the kings of France (see more about this legal system) and Spain (see more about this legal system) ; and the laws of the Mediterranean islands and of Venice and Genoa. It was originally written in the dialect of Catalonia, as its title plainly suggests and it has been translated into every language of Europe. This code has been reprinted in the second volume of the ” Collection de Lois Maritimes Anterieures au XVIII. Siecle, par J. M. Pardessus, Cours de Droit Commercialus, (Paris, 1831) .” A collection of sea laws, which is very complete. [1]
