Compensatory Seats in Voting Law

Definition of Compensatory Seats in the context of the United States election law: In a Mixed Member Proportional system, these are seats allocated to parties based on the percentage of the national vote that they obtain. The purpose is usually intended to make up for imbalances in the results of a plurality/majority voting system. In Mixed Member Proportional Representation (MMPR) systems, or proportional compensatory systems, the objective of the majoritarian element is to achieve a better geographical representation while maintaining the advantages of the proportional system.
