The annual sum granted by the Parlamento of Great Britain at the commencement of each reign for the expenses of the Royal household establishment, as distinguished from the general exigencies of the state . This provision is made for the crown out of the taxes in lieu of its proper patrimony .

In the context of the English law, A Dictionary of Law provides the following legal concept of Civil List : The sum authorized by statute to be paid annually out of the “Consolidated Fund for meeting the expenses of the royal household and for making allowances to certain members of the royal family. It may be increased in amount by Treasury order, but this is liable to annulment by the House of Commons. Certain members of the royal family have volunteered to be taxed on their Civil List allowances.
