Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Definition (in the Accounting Vocabulary)

The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants offers the following definition of Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in a way that is easy for anybody to understand: ACCOUNTANT who has satisfied the education, experience, and examination requirements of his or her jurisdiction necessary to be certified as a public accountant.

A short definition of Certified Public Accountant (cpa): A designation awarded to accountants by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) after completing the required education and passing a national exam. Only CPA’s may audit HUD programs unless registered before 1970.
