In old Scotch law. A gift of a horse, or other thing, made by a man in his lifetime and liege poustie (lawful power) , to the chief of his clan or other superior, for his maintenance and protection, and which was delivered immediately after his decease. Skene de Verb. Sign, voc. “Caupes.” A species of heregeld (q.v.)
