In Scotch law. Laws made by neighbors elected by common consent in the birlaw courts. Skene de Verb. Sign. Laws made by husbandmen, etc., concerning neighborhood (rusticorum leges). Spelman, voc. “Bellagines,” considers this word essentially the same with “by-laws” (q.v.)
