Meaning of Burial

At common law, every person may be buried in the churchyard of the parish where he dies, unless he was within certain ecclesiastical prohibitions (e.g. y not having been baptised), and provided that the rites of the Church of England are observed. See the Burial Acts, 1852 to 1900

What does Burial mean in American Law?

The definition of Burial in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:

Disposition of a dead body by putting it into the earth, or into some special structure designed to receive it, e.g., a burial vault or mausoleum. When a person dead at sea is consigned to the waters, that too is a burial. In some contexts, e.g., burial insurance, the term is sufficiently general to include other standard methods of corpse treatment, e.g., cremation. Cf funeral.
