What does Bear mean in American Law?
The definition of Bear in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:
Well known securities-market slang for an investor who expects the prices of securities to fall, and thus sets out to profit thereby, e.g., by engaging in short sales. See also bull. When the market is falling, especially if the fall is either steady or sharp, it is called a “bear market,” i.e., one to the taste of the bears.
