Meaning of Promissory Estoppel
Although generally a promise to do or forbear from doing something in the future will not give rise to the doctrine of estoppel , under the doctrine of promissory estoppel a promise which the promissor should reasonably expect to induce action or forbearance of a definite or substantial character on the part of the promissee , and which does induce such action or forbearance is binding if injustice can be avoided only by enforcement of the promise. See Wadev MarkweU & Co., 118 Cal. App.2d 410, 258 P.2d497.
