Meaning of Versus

Versus Alternative Definition
(Law Lat.) In practice. Against; an abbreviation of the Latin adversus. Used by Bracton indifferently with contra (q. v.) Actio competit contra eum, an action lies against him. Bracton, fol. 103b. Actio datur versus eum,- an action is given against him. Id. Retained in modern practice, in the titles of causes, but commonly in its contracted forms, vs. and v. The French form, vers, frequently occurs in Britton.

mid-15c., in legal case names, denoting action of one party against another, from Latin versus “turned toward or against,” past participle of vertere “to turn,” from PIE *wert- “to turn, wind,” from root *wer- (2) “to turn, bend.”
