Meaning of Tenths
In English Law. A temporary aid issuing out of personal property, and granted to the .king by parliament; formerly the real tenth part of all the movables belonging to the subject. 1 Bl. Comm. 308. In English Ecclesiastical Law. The tenth part of the annual profit of every living in the kingdom, formerly paid to the pope, but by St. 26 Hen. VIII. c. 3, transferred to the crown, and afterwards made a part of the fund called “Queen Anne’s Bounty.” 1 Bl. Comm. 284-286.

Concept of Tenths
Traditional meaning of tenths [1]: 1. An ancient aid granted the King, being one tenth of each subject’s personalty. 2. The tenth part of all spiritual benefices, formerly paid to the Pope, afterwards to the Crown, and applied by Queen Anne to make up the deficiencies of small benefices, called Queen Anne’s bounty.
