What does Antedate mean in American Law?
The definition of Antedate in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:
To put a date on an instrument earlier than the date of its actual execution. Negotiability of a negotiable instrument is not affected by antedating (see U.C.C. § 3-114), but it is, after all, a lie, and in certain circumstances, e.g., antedating an instrument of gift so as to qualify for more liberal tax treatment, it may also turn out to be a fraud or a crime.
