What does Alleged mean in American Law?
The definition of Alleged in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:
The past tense of allege, but usually with the special connotation, especially in legal contexts, that the speaker is not endorsing the fact stated but merely reporting that it had been made, e.g., “The alleged embezzler smiled as he denied any wrongdoing.” Sometimes it becomes rather a quaint formality as when police detectives on television news primly refer to the fellow on the other end of the handcuffs, who they firmly believe to be an ax murderer, as “the alleged perpetrator.”
