What does Aftermath mean in American Law?

The definition of Aftermath in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:

The old technical meaning was a second crop grass during one season, or the right to take such crop. Nowadays the term is used only metaphorically, to mean “consequence” or “result,” e.g., “As an aftermath of the fire, a new sprinkler system was installed,” or “In the aftermath of the scandal, the whole commission resigned.”
