Meaning of Las partidas

The name of a code of Spanish law. It is sometimes called las siete partidas, or the seven parts, from the number of its principal divisions. It is a compilation from the civil law, the customary law of Spain, and the canon law. It was compiled by four Spanish jurisconsults, under the eye of Alphonso X., A. D. 1250, and published in Castille in 1263, but first promulgated as law by Alphonso XL, A. D. 1348. The maritime law contained in it is given in volume 6, Pardessus, Col. Mar. Law. He follows the edition of 1807, at Paris. It has been translated into English. Such of its provisions as are applicable are in force in Florida, Louisiana, and Texas. 1 Bl.
