Meaning of Carucage

A taxation of land by the caruca or carue. The caruca was as much land as a man could cultivate in a year and a day with a single plough (caruca). Carucage, earugage, or carnage was the tribute paid for each caruca by the carucarius, or tenant. Spelman; Cowell.
