Alpha Particle
Concept of Alpha Particle
In relation to securing dangerous material (in case of crisis or terrorism) a meaning of alpha particle may be outlined, in general regarding European law, as follows: The alpha particle emitted by a radioactive element is a nucleus of a Helium atom, containing two neutrons plus two protons. In general, external alpha contamination is not a critical danger as a few centimeters of air, paper, or the thin layer of dead skin cells form a sufficient shield against them. Inner contamination by ingestion, inhalation or injuries is more serious due to the high absorbed radiation dose on a short distance.[1]
