The definition of Act of grace in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:
A more or less general amnesty and/or pardon declared by a monarch to mark some important royal occasion, e.g., coronation, marriage, recovery from illness. In modern limited monarchies, though the act of grace might formally still be the monarch’s, it ordinarily requires legislative enactment, and is more the act of the actual government than the titular ruler.
