The definition of Ad filum viae in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:
“To the middle of the way,” i.e., to the center of a road. A term, like ad ilium aquae, used to describe the ownership reach of adjoining landowners, in this instance when the border between them is a road or path. If the road is public, it may also describe the reach of the contiguous landowner’s duties of repair.
