The New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants offers the following definition of Marketable Securities in a way that is easy for anybody to understand: Stocks and other negotiable instruments which can be easily bought and sold on either listed exchanges or over-the-counter markets.
United States Tax Concept of Marketable Securities
Stocks, bonds, and other securities that are easily sold. A marketable security has a readily determinable fair market value and can be converted into cash at any time.
