Legal Definition and Related Resources of Territories

Meaning of Territories

System of organized government long existing within the United States by which certain regions of the country have been erected into civil governments. See New York ex rel. Kopel v Bingham, 211 U.S. 468, 29 S. Ct. 190, 53 L.Ed. 286. Also, an area of land acquired by the United States by treaty or purchase which have not become an integral part of the United States. See Rassmussen v United States, 197 U.S. 516, 25 S. Ct. 514, 49 L.Ed. 862. Also, these are inchoate States or temporary sovereign governments organized under the laws of Congress and limited by the constitution of the United States. See Harris v municipality of St. Thomas and St. John, (D.C. Virgin Islands) 111 F.Supp. 63.
