Structural adjustment in Global Commerce Policy
In this regard, a definition of this issue is as follows: the continuous process experienced by all industries of needing to adjust to new economic and commercial conditions brought about by changes in consumer preferences, technological innovation, tariff reductions, subsidy phase-outs, long-term changes in the cost of components and raw materials, etc. Sometimes this results in the rapid disappearance of a complete sector, such as has occurred in slide-rule production when the electronic calculator appeared. Structural adjustment can be accompanied by government support for the retraining of workers and other measures. Whether governments are prepared to pay up often depends on the political clout of the industry. Since the mid-1980s, the term has also come to refer to a particular set of policy prescriptions requested of developing countries by international financial institutions such as the IBRD (World Bank) and the IMF. The granting of assistance packages by these institutions is typically conditional on a tightening of fiscal policies and the achievement of macro-economic stability through tough anti- inflationary policies.
