Definition of Statistics
The Canada social science dictionary [1] provides the following meaning of Statistics: Refers to a collection of tests or techniques that are applied to the data, or observations, which social scientists have gathered. There are two categories of statistics: descriptive and inferential. Descriptive statistics are used to describe characteristics of the sample or population the researcher is working with, for example one can calculate a mean, standard deviation, etc. Inferential statistics are used for drawing inferences about a population based on the observations of a sample. For example, reports of opinion polls routinely note that ‘a sample of this size is accurate to within x% 19 times out of 20’. This is the inference to be drawn about the population from which the sample was drawn.

Etimology of Statistics
(You may find statistics at the world legal encyclopedia and the etimology of more terms).
1770, “science dealing with data about the condition of a state or community” [Barnhart], from German Statistik, popularized and perhaps coined by German political scientist Gottfried Aschenwall (1719-1772) in his “Vorbereitung zur Staatswissenschaft” (1748), from Modern Latin statisticum (collegium) “(lecture course on) state affairs,” from Italian statista “one skilled in statecraft,” from Latin status “a station, position, place; order, arrangement, condition,” figuratively “public order, community organization,” noun of action from past participle stem of stare “to stand” from PIE root *sta- “to stand, make or be firm.” the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) points out that “the context shows that [Aschenwall] did not regard the term as novel,” but current use of it seems to trace to him. Sir John Sinclair is credited with introducing it in English use. Meaning “numerical data collected and classified” is from 1829; hence the study of any subject by means of extensive enumeration. Abbreviated form stats first recorded 1961.
