Meaning of Standing Mute

Formerly, at common law , where an accused was arraigned for treason or felony and he answered nothing at all to the charge or answered irrelevantly or after pleading not guilty refused to put himself on the country, he was said to stand mute. under modern practise , where an accused stands mute and neglects or refuses to plead , he is in effect considered to plead not guilty. See Wood v United States , 75 App. D.C. 274, 128 F.2d 265.

Refusal of one charged with crime to plead to the charge, or, after plea of not guilty, to put himself upon the country.
