Meaning of Placer Claim

In mining law, a claim wherein valuable mineral is not found in veins, lodes, or ledges within the rock, but in a loose condition in the softer materials that cover the surface of the earth. See Clipper Min. Co. v Eli Min. & Land Co., 194 U.S. 220, 24 S.Ct. 632, 48 L.Ed. 944. Also, United States v Iron Silver Min. Co., 128 U.S. 673, 9 S.Ct. 195,32 L.Ed. 571. Not a location of lodes or veins underneath the surface, but is simply a claim of a parcel or tract of ground for the sake of loose deposits of minerals upon or near the surface. See Clipper Min. Co. v Eli Min. & Land Co. ( supra ). Also see 30 U.S.C. §35.
