Meaning of Pension
Formerly, the term referred only to gratuities paid by the government in recognition of past services in the Army or Navy. Dismukes v United States , 297 U.S. 167,56 S. Ct. 400, 80 L. Ed. 561. regular allowances paid to an individual by the government in consideration of services rendered, or in recognition of merit , civil or military. United States v Hall, 98 U.S. 343, 25 L.Ed. 180. A bounty or gratuity bestowed as a token of the government’s benevolence. Anderson v United States, (C.A.9.Wash.) 205 E.2d326, 40 A.L.R.2d639. In modern times, the term has also acquired the meaning of a deferred portion of the compensation earned for services rendered. See Sonnabend v Spokane, 53 Wash.2d362, 333 P.2d918. Statutes may, however, give the term a special or extended or restrictive meaning.
Pension Alternative Definition
A stated and certain allowance granted by the government to an individual, or those who represent him, for valuable services performed by him for the country. It is sometimes loosely used in the sense of annuity. In Spanish Law. Rent; a rent, White, New Recop. bk. 2, c. 2, § 3.
