Meaning of Mercosur

The common market of the South, a customs union which includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay in a regional trade pact that reduces tariffs on intrapact trade by up to 90 percent. Bolivia and Chile are associate members.

Mercosur in Global Commerce Policy

In this regard, mercosur is: Mercado Común del Sur (Southern Common Market). Currently a customs union covering trade in goods except sugar and automobiles. Mercosur objectives include the free transit of all goods, services and the factors of production, and the lifting of non-tariff restrictions. The entries on trade policy are here. It was established on 29 November 1991 through the Treaty of Asunción and amended on 17 December 1994 through the Protocol of Ouro Preto which covers mainly institutional issues. The entries on trade policy are here. It includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Chile signed an association agreement on 1 October 1996. Bolivia did so on 1 March 1997. Membership is open to ALADI members. There are also plans to harmonize regulations on intellectual property rights within the area, and to have mutual recognition of university degrees. The Mercosur secretariat is located in Montevideo.[1]
