Meaning of Federal Common Law

while it has been said that there is no federal common law , after Erie Railroad v Tompkins, 304 U.S. 64, 82 L.Ed. 1188, 58 S.Ct. 817, it has been held that a federal common law exists in certain areas, such as air and water disputes between states. See Illinois v Milwaukee, 406 U.S. 91, 92 S.Ct. 1385, 31 L.Ed.2d712.
