Concept of D-value
In relation to securing dangerous material (in case of crisis or terrorism) a meaning of d-value may be outlined, in general regarding European law, as follows: The D value is the activity of a specified radionuclide which, if not under control, could cause severe health effects in the short term, including death, for a range of scenarios that include both external exposure from an unshielded source and internal exposure following dispersal of the source material. The categorization system has five levels, with sources in Category 1 being the most ˜dangerous ™, at the lower end, sources in Category 5 are the least dangerous.[1]
