Legal Definition and Related Resources of Canal
Meaning of Canal
An artificial trench or ditch for the purpose of allowing water to flow through the same for transportation purposes. A natural channel that has been deepened artificially is not a canal, for a canal can only exist where the ingenuity of men, rather than nature, is paramount in the making of the watercourse . Columbus, Newark & Zanesville Electric R. Co. v Nelson, 14 Ohio Cir. Ct., N.S. 129. The admiralty jurisdiction for the United States does not extend to canals. See Warn v Easton & McMahon transit Co., 2 N. Y.S. 620.
