Meaning of Caballero
(Spanish; from Latin eaballus, a horse). In Spanish law. A knight. So called on account of its being more honorable to go on horseback (a caballo) than on any other beast. White, New Recop. bk 1, tit. 5, c. 3, § 3; Id. bk. 1, tit. 5, c. 1; Id. bk. 4, tit. 10, c. 1, § 6.
