Meaning of Amsterdam Treaty
In the context of Europe, and according to A Dictionary of Law, the following is a definition of Amsterdam Treaty : The EU treaty signed in Amsterdam in 1997(in force from 1 May 1999), which amended provisions of the *Treaty of Rome (European Community Treaty) and the *Maastricht Treaty (Treaty on European Union). Among other effects, the Amsterdam Treaty increased the powers of the European Parliament by extending the *codecision procedure to all areas covered by qualified majority voting and enabled the *Social Chapter to be incorporated into the Treaty of Rome.
