science of land management for crop production, 1796, from French agronomie (1761), from Greek agronomos “overseer of land,” from agros “a field, a farm; the country (as opposed to the town)” (see acre) + nomos “law or custom, administering,” related to nemein “manage” (from PIE root *nem- “to assign, allot; to take;” see nemesis).
