Ad aliud examen

What does Ad aliud examen mean in American Law?

The definition of Ad aliud examen in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:

“To another examination [or “trial”].” A litigant who wished to object in a superior Royal court that an action was being prosecuted against him in a tribunal lacking jurisdiction (e.g., and most significantly, an ecclesiastical court) would complain that he was being unlawfully drawn “ad aliud examen.” If the litigant made out his case, a writ of prohibition would issue to the other court and party.
