What does Act of indemnity mean in American Law?
The definition of Act of indemnity in the law of the United States, as defined by the lexicographer Arthur Leff in his legal dictionary is:
A law passed to legalize actions by public officials which were illegal when taken, or to insulate the officials against punishments or penalities for such acts. The laws are almost wholly directed to what almost everyone would consider technical violations of law, and are not some sort of legislative pardon for substantial illegalities. And there is some doubt whether, at least in the U.S., more than minor technical violations could be constitutionally reached by a subsequently enacted act of
indemnity, or whether such nunc pro tunc validation of an unlawful act could oust any private claim based upon the initial illegality.
